This individual was quite similar to the juvenile shown in Sibley.  According to this guide the juvenile Common Nighthawk would be more cinnamon color in the body with contrasting gray wings.

Cris Sandoval spotted a Lesser Nighthawk along Venoco Rd. this afternoon.  It was perched on the fence enclosing the North Campus Open Space at approx. 34.41786, -119.88051 where the fence turns north from Venoco Rd.  This is most likely the same bird Tessa Rhinehart (eBird:S38544618) saw yesterday evening at the beach entrance to the Pond Trail at COPR.
