Anisq'Oyo park Hooded Mergansers

Dika Golovatchoff

This afternoon there were 7 females and 1 male Hooded Merganser among the many Mallards.  Also nice views of a Say's Phoebe, Ruby-crowned Kinglet and a Snowy Egret.  Flocks of crows, as well as Brewer's and Red-winged Blackbirds perched among the trees and dropped into the pond for a bath.  The usual Black-crowned Night Herons were not around.

The crayfish in the pond are the favored prey of this attractive small diving duck. The Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatusis not a member of the merganser (merga) genus but rather the sole member of its own genus Lophodytes .  These ducks seem to arrive in this charming Isla Vista park at about the time the students depart for Christmas break.

I've posted a few photos at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/digolov/.  I shot a lot of video which I'll process and post later.
