Great Blue Heron Kills/Eats Ground Squirrel

Yesterday (Mon) Pam and I watch a GB Heron kill and consume a Ground Squirrel at Goleta Slough mouth. The Heron caught the squirrel in the boulders on the parking lot side of the slough mouth and flew with it to the north sand bank where the squirrel struggled and unsuccessfully tried to break free. In the end, it looked like the Heron drowned the squirrel. Having thoroughly soaked the squirrel in the water (see photo), the Heron swallowed it whole - a feat that really didn’t look physically possible.
