I still get newsletters from the Indiana Audubon society.  In their most recent "Notes from the Field," the following article about documentation caught my eye:

Finding and identifying a rare bird can be an exciting moment. Documenting rare and unusual sightings helps us remember the birds we encounter, provides an archive to bird population changes, and capture behavior and other traits that a photograph may not show.  While modern bird record committees now accept eBird checklists, learning the lost art of documenting can help a long way to making a contribution to Indiana's ornithological record.
