Re: Swan ID - Andree Clark Bird Refuge

In this photo, there's clearly patchy yellow extending down to the cutting edges of the bill. A.k.a. a large yellow area on the bill. This bird still looks like something Asian to me; either Bewick's or Whooper.

Thanks for
everyone's insights. Bradley Hacker took a much nicer

Here are a couple more photos. My feeling is it's a Tundra Swan. You can click
on the photos to get a closer look.

People should know that I've received emails from a couple of people expressing the sentiment that this bird might be a hybrid involving Mute, per one of Noah's suggestions.

Cuyama

Brad Hacker <bradley_r_hacker@...>

Made a sweep through Cuyama today, with the principal objectives being Bell's, Black-Chinned, and Brewer's Sparrows. Only found Bell's Sparrows, in Qatal and Ballinger Canyons. Very pleasant day with temperatures initially of 32F, climbing to 75F.

I found a weird thrasher with a white mask; I'd appreciate comments from those who can ID the species. There are some rotten pictures here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S35980539

Re: Swan ID - Andree Clark Bird Refuge

Dave Compton

Just looked at these, first on my phone and then on my monitor. I think we can all agree this bird is not (1) a Mute Swan or (2) a Trumpeter Swan. The first look on my phone really got my attention because of what I first perceived to be a large yellowish area on the bill. But zooming in on the image, and then looking at it on my monitor, shows what looks to me like a discrete area of yellow as an adult Tundra (Whistling) would have, and a pale, off-color area next to the yellow. I suspect this is your basic Tundra, and that pale area will soon enough turn black. This is a young bird transitioning to a more adult appearance. And part of the bill is still clearly pink. So it would be interesting to see this bird when the pink has all gone.

Of course, if I'm right, this is still a nice bird for the location and the time of year. I've never seen one here in April, and this is only a few days from being record late here. If I'm not right, I'd be happy to be corrected, and really hope this bird stays around.

Re: Swan ID - Andree Clark Bird Refuge

Noah Arthur

That's an odd bird, and likely Asian IMHO... If a Tundra, it's an Old World 'Bewick's' Swan, given all the yellow on the bill. Another possibility might be immature Whooper Swan, and yet another might be MuteXTundra... But I'm no expert when it comes to swans...

I spotted a swan in Andree Clark
Bird Refuge this morning, on the west side near the SB zoo.
It's not a mute swan. I tentatively IDed it as a tundra
swan, but I would appreciate the insights of someone with
more expertise. Sorry for the poor photo quality.

Although not that unusual, we had a Western Tanager at our bird bath in Orcutt this morning.  Other noteworthy yard birds this a.m. were BH Grosbeaks, White Throated Sparrow, Hooded Oriole and Bullocks Orioles.

Betsy and I had a pleasant stroll through the SB Botanic Garden Friday evening.  No rarities, but lots of bird activity: Orange-crowned, Yellow-rumped, Wilson’s, Black-throated Gray, Townsend’s Warblers and Common Yellowthroat, Warbling Vireo, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, and lots of Lesser Goldfinches.  Two centers of activity were just above the dam and the lower area of the Island Section.  The flowers were pretty nice too.

I agree that there seem to be a tremendous number of Eared Grebes everywhere right now.

Farren Road

Brad Hacker <bradley_r_hacker@...>

Had a pleasant walk of most of Farren Rd this AM. Pretty quiet for an April morning with perfect weather. Failed to see the Common Ground-Doves or a Phainopepla, but had good looks at Roadrunner, Ash-Throated Flycatcher, and Blue Grosbeak. One Vaux' Swift flyby. One Eared Grebe and one Spotted Sandpiper on the reservoir.

Good morning all

Cassin's Vireo on Kinevan Rd

Mark Holmgren <maholmgren@...>

I bounced around Paradise Road along the Santa Ynez River this morning hoping to hear Bell's Vireo.
No luck there.  On the way home I stopped at Kinevan Road where, at the upstream bridge (the new bridge), a Cassin's Vireo was singing.  I did not bird the majority of Kinevan Rd, but where Kinevan Rd meets West Camino Cielo another Cassin's Vireo was singing.

Refugio Canyon, yesterday, Farren Road today

Joan Lentz (cox.net address)

Hi All:
Today in bird class we walked on Farren Rd. At a location north of the reservoir in one of the scraggly avocado trees, there were two Common Ground Doves. They stayed for a few minutes for good looks, then flew. This is still one of the best locations on the south coast to see this species.
What's missing are the Grasshopper Sparrows (not there since 2013 according to BOSB), no meadowlarks. Four Common Ravens were flying around.
On Sun., I had 3 singing roadrunners at various points along Farren Road, but not today, alas.
Yesterday, a quick check of Refugio Canyon Road produced lots of birds in two stops, altho nothing unusual. I didn't go down to the state beach. All along the creek, the evidence of scouring from the heavy rains showed quite a bit of flood damage. I understand this includes the state beach migrant area as well, so am hoping the few trees will grow back there-- very open now.
Good birding!

La Purisima State Park

Florence Sanchez

I heard Hooded Orioles and Black-Headed Grosbeaks in the historic section of the park when I arrived about 9 a.m. this morning.  My focus today was on wildflowers, so I did not go into there except at the end of my hike.  I think it could be good in the morning hours.  I concentrated on the main trail loop around the perimeter of the state park, also branching off to a long loop trail that would take me along side both of the larger riparian areas on the north side of the park.  I had a fair number of birds, including Hairy and Nuttall's Woodpeckers, Warbling Vireo in both sets of willow forest, and a singing Wilson's Warbler in the willow area above the old dam.  Quail were everywhere.  I had a few Tree Swallows overhead.  If you are not interested in flowers, delete this message now.

I had an incredible wildflower walk, especially off the main trail on the sandy loop trail that branched off just beyond the first willow grove.  With some exceptions, I did not find "Persian Carpet" masses of flowers but the variety of individual species I found was amazing.  I kept turning up something new around every bend in the trail.  I identified at least 34 different species and found 3 -5 more that I could not identify, all this on a loop a little over a mile in length.

Dominant species seen on the main trail as well as the loop trail included the Large-flowered Fiddleneck, Popcorn flower, White Layia (L. glandulosa, I believe), our native thistle just coming into bloom, and the tall Lompoc Wallflower, as well as two varieties of purple Bush Lupine.  After I turned off the main trail, I found such things as Chia Sage, Ball Gilia, two kinds of Phaecelia, Purple Nightshade, Parry's Larkspur, Scarlet Bugler, Chinese Houses, Fiesta Flower, Malacothrix, Owl's Clover, and a few clumps of Indian Paintbrush.  In spite of soft sand and abundant poison Oak, it's worth the effort to take this hike.

After I left La Purisima, I drove to Los Alamos for lunch via Drum Canyon Road.  I didn't find much in the way of wildflowers until I reached the point where the road narrows to a single patchwork-pavement lane and starts up the hill.  I found a big patch of bi-colored annual Lupine here; then lots of poppies in the roadcut above.  I continued to find poppies in all the roadcuts, along with bush Monkey Flower, Sticky Phaecelia, more lupine, and a couple of pink flowers that may have been early Clarkia.  All in all, a great spring morning in Santa Barbara County.

Lompoc

Wes Fritz

SB Birders,

I birded a few locations in the Lompoc area today. I started at River Park and it was pretty dead. I then moved over to Lasalle Canyon and had a nice assortment of expected birds, the highlights are one white striped Whited-throated Sparrow hanging out with some Golden Sparrows, also seen were PAC-slope Fly, Warbling Vireo, Orange-crowned, Wilson's, Yellow and Nashville Warblers. I also heard a Lazuli Bunting. It was fairly birdy. I then hit up Surf Beach and then realized I left my scope at home, doh!!! I then moved over to Ocean Park and it would have been nice to have a scope there as well, birds of note are one Osprey, 42 Eared Grebes 16 Greater Yellowlegs, 60ish peeps and 8 Caspian Terns. The water is slowly rising so it could have some potential of getting some migrants. I then went over to Floradale Road and checked out the Lompoc penitentiary dairy, here I saw a very dark Peregrine Falcon near the entrance eating a EC Dove. The falcon had bands on both legs. I ended up at the end of Moonglow Road in the Burton Mesa preserve, here I saw two photogenic Soras at the pond.

Good birding,

6-warbler day

Guy Tingos <guy.tingos@...>

At the Sedgwick Reserve (restricted access) today, I had Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-rumped, Orange-crowned, Wilson’s, Nashville, and Black-throated Gray Warblers.  The last 4 species were in one oak tree.  There seems to be some nice warbler movement the last couple of weeks.  Should be a good time to be checking coastal spots like San Jose Creek.
