Least Terns Sands Beach

Bradley Hacker

Ten Least Terns on Sands Beach this AM, at least 4 of which were wearing juvenile attire--tawny caps and pale wings. One Black Turnstone + the usual collection. Many tens of egrets, herons and cormorants fishing the S tip of Devereux Slough.

Nick Lethaby

I just saw a ebird alert of a "Common Tern" from yesterday at Coal Oil Point, which is, in fact, an Arctic Tern. Not sure if it is still around. It was sitting on the beach.

I was the one who filed the ebird report on the common tern. I changed it to reflect that it was an arctic tern.

Reddish Egret at Guadalupe Dunes-Santa Maria River

John Deacon

All:

I will post on E Bird later.  At 1045 hrs today (8/17), I saw and photographed a Reddish Egret in the Santa Maria River about 0.5 miles east of the ocean.  It was in one of the riparian areas that are easily observed from the road.  There were also 4 Great Egrets in that area.  For what it's worth, I tied pink marking tape on the fence alongside the road from where I photographed the REEG.

Cassin’s Vireos on Kinevan

Mark Holmgren

Though not many birds were seen in Kinevan today, at about 11:30am a Cassin’s Vireo sang near the junction with West Camino Cielo. Back on Kinevan Rd at 3:30pm, a pair was singing about 120m downstream of the upper new bridge. Another pair sang at the new bridge.
5 singers in 3 different places. Both males and females of this species sing so I suspect these pairs are birds still on territory.

Area K morning of Aug. 19

Florence Sanchez

Had only time for a little birding today so went to Area K to ee what was up.  A lot of Black-necked Stilts were working the shallow pond and there seemed to be a few other birds around the perimeter, especially to the east.  However, that estimate proved to be faulty. When something startled the birds slightly, everyone flew to the middle of the pond and I could see that there were a lot more present than I thought.

My Stilt count was 32; at least 6 Lesser Yellowlegs and 1 Greater; at least a dozen Dowitchers; at least 10 Western Sandpipers; 4 Least Sandpipers; 4 Wilson's Phalaropes; 2 Kildeer.  I never heard the "keek" call of Long-billed Dowitcher but did get a few short "tu-tu-" calls as the flock moved around.  However, with Lesser Yellowlegs also present, I could not be sure of the call.

There were two shite-faced Ibis working the far shore and two Snowy Egrets were present in the west end.  Waterfowl were sarce:  about 8 coots and 1 mallard.

Definitely still a place to watch, and the water is going to last quite a while yet.
