Date

15 BWHA at GGRO yesterday

John Callender

Yesterday was the best day of the year so far for Broad-winged Hawks at the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, with 15 birds reported. Birds tracked with radio telemetry in previous years have taken 2-3 days to reach our part of the state, so the next few days would be a good time to keep
an eye out for migrating Broad-wings.

All,

I and a few others (Lori, Dika, ...) checked out the mirror pond from about 5 PM. After noticing that the birds were coming down to the cypress trees by the south end but not drinking, we relocated to the steps above the N end and the warblers started coming in. We had a Blackpoll and a Palm in addition to all the western species known to be present. Late on, the Canada Warbler came in all on its own.

NCOS Sept 19

Of late but possible interest...I visited NCOS Sunday afternoon. Honestly, there were very few birds, but a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was present with a juvenile Black-crowned at the Whittier Pond, and four juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes were foraging near the bridge that separates NCOS from Devereux Slough. The only other bird of possible interest was a single Dunlin feeding with 10 Least Sandpipers. It would be interesting to try to figure out how many Yellow-crowned Night-Herons are present locally.

Good birding

Riviera Business Park September 20

Steven Gaulin

The lerpy Eucalyptus trees at the Riviera Business Park continued to attract many migrants today. Among the warblers, Yellow, Wilson's and (somewhat surprisingly) Black-throated Gray were all common, with fewer Townsend's and Orange-crowned, one or two Hermit, and a single (first-year female?) Canada. The Canada stayed quite high for a while but eventually showed well on a low branch in front of a main trunk. I did not bring my camera because I expected all the birds to be too high and back-lighted, but all present saw: a warbler with slightly bluish gray back, no wing bars, white spectacles, yellowish lores, bright yellow underparts with faint grayish steaks in a small band below the throat, and contrasting white under-tail coverts. We did not see the previously reported Nashville Warbler. Also present were multiple female-type Western Tanagers and Black-headed Grosbeaks. Aden Lounds, a UCSB student, spotted the Canada.

Though the birds tend to stay high, this area still seems very good for migrants and a worthy competitor to the LogMeIn Tipus.

Good birding!

Least Flycatcher "LogMeOut"

Nick Lethaby

All,

After Curtis Marantz raised some questions about the Least Flycatcher claimed at LogMeIn yesterday, further analysis of the many photos (thanks to all who submitted these) indicates that the bird is in fact a Pacific-slope Flycatcher. In addition, the bird was later heard to call like a PSFL. Please change the entries in your e-bird lists accordingly.

To provide a bit more context on why Dave and I went off down the wrong path on this one, this bird lacked yellow on the throat/breast and had a pale eyering of rather even width (in some photos a slight teardrop effect is visible but I didn't see this in the field). Once down the wrong path, it's easy to start misjudging features like how long the bill is and how 'blackish' the wings are.

In retrospect, a number of features make this a PSFL (we are ruling out Cordilleran on range - hopefully the  AOU will relump these):

1. Primary tip spacing is uneven, which is typical of Western but not Least
2. While the bird lacks yellow on the throat/breast, the throat would typically be a cleaner white on Least
3.Wings/wingbars are typically more contrasting black-and-white on Least, not 'blackish-and-buff' as on this bird and in general Least is a colder-looking bird than the LogMeIn bird
4.Bill too long. Possibly because the bird was seen below us, the lack of a really obvious lower mandible was another feature that got us off the PSFL track, but a few of the photos suggest the bill was wholly orange below
5. Fall Least Flycatchers I see usually appear dark brown-olive above with a subtle grayish cast to the hindneck. This is only visible in good light at the right angle and I attributed my failure to see to suboptimal light conditions. However, a few photos of the bird show a relatively bright green hindneck that would never be on a Least.
6. Overall the bird lacked the hyperactive wing/tail flicking often shown by Least.

Goleta birding Sept. 20

Florence Sanchez

I started at the LogMeIn tipus, where I found that birders had already located the Canada Warbler seen over the weekend and a new arrival, a Chestnut-sided Warbler.  We spent some time searching the eucalyptus grove but there was no sign of the Ovenbird found over the weekend.  However, we did pick up the Red-eyed Vireo in the tipu trees around the parking lot north of the eucalyptus grove.  And in addition, we had up to 3 Warbling Vireos in a small Mexican ash tree at the edge of the euc grove.  Of course, there were continuing sightings of other more common birds such as Wilson's Yellow, and range-crowned Warblers throughout the complex.  I suspect the menu may change daily so it's worth rechecking this site.

On thing I did this morning was pour about 5 gallons of water in the little drainage area just next to building 7144.  We found last year that this is a popular bathing spot when it has water in it.  This morning, I pulled in only Song Sparrow, Scaly-breasted Munias, and a Common Yellowthroat, but I still suggest trying this when you go there.  The water doesn't last long so the more dumped in this spot, the better.

I moved on to the nearby end of Coronado Drive.  We've not heard much from this site and I wondered what conditions were like.  I found there is plenty of water in the little bathing area and during the hour I watched, a lot of birds came down to the spot.  Best bird was a Black-throated Gray Warbler, the rest were more common species, but I feel this site definitely has possibilities right now.   Species list:

1 Nuttall's Woodpecker
1Downy Woodpecker
1 Pacific Slope Flycatcher
1 Black Phoebe
1 Warbling Vireo
2 Chestnut-backed Chickadees
1 Oak Titmouse
1 White-breasted Nuthatch
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
1Wrentit
3 Scaly-breasted Munia
2 House Finches
1 Song Sparrow
2 Dark-eyed Juncos
1 Orange-crowned Warbler
1 Common Yellowthroat
1 Yellow Warbler
1 Black-throated Gray Warbler
2 Townsend's Warblers
2 Wilson's Warblers
4 Western Tanagers (all at one time)
1 Black-headed Grosbeak

In the vicinity, I also heard a Hairy Woodpecker and a Bewick's Wren.

Canada Warbler, Hollister business park (formerly Logmein)

Dika Golovatchoff

Although I saw a Canada Warbler (Cardelina canadensis) from the parking lot at Riviera Park yesterday (along with a Tennessee Warbler) through binoculars and/or spotting scope I finally got a couple of photos this morning (showing identifying features as seen from below) at the Goleta location, where we also observed a Chestnut-sided Warbler.  I did not find a Red-eyed Vireo or Ovenbird.  The Canada Warbler was moving very actively high among the tipu trees at the furthest parking lot from the main entrance.

I'll go back again to Riviera Park in the late afternoon as I have found that the bird activity around the water lily pool can be pretty dynamic starting a bit after 5PM (if there are not  any children, dogs, or adult partiers around).  A few photos at:

Nick et al: I was just to post the following.

Yesterday (2021-09-19) at around 15:57 a number of birders saw and photographed this flycatcher. It was calling, which I managed to record. As you can see and hear here its "tink" is a good match for a Pacific-slope Flycatcher.

Re: tipus & eucs

I channeled my inner Eric Culbertson this morning by biking around Carpinteria with some compact binoculars to survey a few places that have been good in previous falls. The best spot I visited was the "Cactus Lane tipus", a small complex of parking lots with tipu trees and eucalyptus in downtown Carpinteria. There were decent numbers of Wilson's and Yellow Warblers, and a cooperative Blackpoll Warbler in the tipu canopy behind Rincon Brewery near (34.3982370, -119.5182299).

This AM I checked tipus at Olivos St x Santa Barbara St (about a dozen in a church parking lot) and Butterfly Ln/Music Academy. The first was essentially a total bust for migrants and I was able to turn up only Orange-Crowned, Yellow and Wilson's Warblers at the latter. Nearly all migrants were in only a few specific trees.

Hi All:  Wanted to echo John Callender’s message!  If it weren’t for the great group of helpful birders who surrounded me up at Riviera Business Park this morning, I wouldn’t have seen half the wonderful warblers that frequented this amazing location.  The last time I saw a Canada Warbler was in September of 2000, one I found here in Montecito in a pittasporum (sp?) hedge.  I can’t believe it’s been that long, and I’m sure I’ve missed some along the way, but WOW, that’s a rare bird in Santa Barbara!
The friendly way that people are reaching out to me, quite handicapped as I am, has warmed my heart and made me so grateful to be part of Santa Barbara’s birding community.  It’s special here, no question.
And we sure had a landbird push of fall migrants this weekend — great timing, great birds!

Great birding today at the LogMeIn complex

John Callender

I had a lot of fun birding today at what I think of as the LogMeIn business park in western Goleta, though I understand it’s not going to be LogMeIn much longer. I saw two life birds (Red-eyed Vireo and Least Flycatcher), two county-year birds (Blackpoll Warbler and Ovenbird), and two other birds that tripped the rarity filters in eBird (Canada Warbler and Tennessee Warbler).

I know there’s more to birding than rarities, but today felt pretty special, and I only had that special day because of the great group of local birders who found these birds and helped me get on them.

More details, including (mostly bad) photos, are in this eBird list:

Several features that I'd normally like to get on a Least were never detected, including any recognizable vocalization (it was silent) and the color of the underside of the bill. We did get good looks at was a prominent white eye ring that was rounder than that of Pac-slope; a whitish throat contrasting mildly with the breast; bold, buffy wing bars contrasting markedly with the dark, blackish wings; and a relatively short bill (compared to Willow of Pac-slope) that had a fairly wide base. I was too focused on wing color when I got a good view of the bird from behind to notice the length of the primary extension. Nick Lethaby commented that it looked moderate, making me think it was not short like a Dusky's primaries or long like a Hammond's. John Callender got some photos, and he showed me a couple in which I thought the bird looked pretty good for Least. But the color of the underside of the bill and length of the primary extension weren't obvious in these photos. He did get several other photos I have not seen.
Anyone looking for this bird should know that there were several Pac-slope Flycatchers in the area this morning, including one that was seen frequently in the northeast corner of the basin, and that at one point was seen in the northeast corner."

- Comments: "Extremely active warbler in the western tipu trees that was medium gray above with a bold white eye, and bright yellow below with a faint grayish necklace and contrasting white under tail coverts. The tail was medium length for a warbler's, and was dull gray on the underside. The bird was relatively easy to pick out from below because of the white under tail coverts, unlike those of the Wilson's and Yellows in the area, and unlike the one or two Orange-crowneds. The gray underside of the tail made it look similar to Wilson's or Orange-crowned in that respect, but very different from Yellow."

Had lots of help locating this bird in the heavily "lerped" eucalyptus trees along the entrance drive that heads east/west towards Riviera Theater. At first we were looking at the largest and nearest euc , meaning nearest to the pond quad, but we found the Canada Warbler in the smaller "lerped" euc. farther east. I was able to get good looks at a warbler with bright yellow chest, belly, but pure white vent area extends to gray tail. Eye is large and blends into gray head and dark slate back. A faint line can be seen of the "black necklace" but truly hard to pick out unless you get scope views. Thanks to Jeff & all other birders who helped me with this bird!"

Riviera Park late afternoon Sept. 19

Florence Sanchez

I got there a little after 3:30 and found reasonable snatches of bird activity with quiet periods in between.  I stayed until about 5.

I spotted a Tennessee Warbler in the sedges in the reflecting pond fairly soon.  It made at least 2 other trips down to the pond while I was there.  The continuing Canada Warbler didn't show up until about 4:45.  I had an excellent look at it as it perched on the horizontal branches of the large leaved vine growing on the inside of the pergola near the entrance.  It then flew to the east and did not come down to the pond.

Other birds  of interest present included at least 3 Wilson's. 1 Yellow Warbler, at least 3 Townsend's Warblers, 1 very dull Yellow-rumped Warbler, at least 2 (and possibly 3) Black-throated Gray Warblers, 1 female Common Yellowthroat, at least 3 Orange-crowned Warblers, and two Western Tanagers.  One of the Tanagers (a male) has a white head, a startling sight.

Canada Warbler, Riviera Park

Today Larry Ballard and I had great looks at the Canada Warbler when we had the good fortune to have it land very low in the bottlebrush tree in the east end of the upper parking lot. It was about seven feet off the ground with the bottlebrush tree up against the building. We watched and the Canada Warbler from 12:10 pm to after 12:30 pm. The bird moved from the bottle brush tree to the 10 foot tall oaks in the parking lot briefly and then flew down to the large eucalyptus at the south end of the lawn right by Lasuen Road where it leaves APS, it was high up about 30 to 50 feet up in the company of Wilson's and Yellow Warblers. This was the same eucalyptus where a number of birders and I saw it on Saturday afternoon.

I have five photos posted to my Flicker site here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/118311568@N08/with/51494580124/

Re: Red-eyed Vireo, Canada Warbler

Dave Compton

Hi folks,

Apologies if any of the information provided earlier was unclear. I was trying to get the word out about several birds while still in the field.

All birds in the list mentioned before were at the business park at 7402 to 7418 Hollister Ave in Goleta, formerly the LogMeIn complex.

CANADA WARBLER: John Callender found a Canada Warbler in the western parking lot in tipus  along the west side of the northwesternmost building of the complex. What was presumably the same bird was later seen briefly at the northern edge of the eucalyptus basin. So, while this bird was consistently in the same area for most of the morning, later it was less reliable.

RED-EYED VIREO: Continued at the northern edge of the eucalyptus basin, but difficult to see. By the time I'd left, it hadn't been seen for at least two hours. It was seen in blue gum, red gum, and a small ash tree, and maybe some other trees in the area.

TENNESSEE WARBLER: Found this morning by Rebecca Coulter, north of the eucalyptus basin, in cherries along the northern fence line. Seen by many mid-morning, but people weren't really looking for it after that.

BLACKPOLL WARBLER: Found chipping in the tipu trees just west of the eucalyptus basin. Not in view for long, but seen again later in this same area.

LEAST FLYCATCHER: I'm fairly comfortable with this ID, and Nick is convinced. The bird was in the northeast corner of the eucalyptus basin, providing excellent views for several minutes, before melting back into the eucalyptus trees to the south. It was silent. There was a Pac-slope (one of several present this morning) seen consistently in the northwest corner of the basin, and also seen at least once about where the presumed Least was seen. I was there for an hour or more after the Least sighting and did not see it again.

Ovenbird: I can't believe we all missed this bird before 1pm, and it turned up again after I left.

Birds seen here today, so far, include Least Flycatcher (nw corner of euc basin), Tennessee Warbler (cherry trees along northern fence line), Canada Warbler (aforementioned location AND at the euc basin), Red-eyed Vireo (skulky), and Blackpoll Warbler (just west of the euc basin, in tipus). No sign of Ovenbird.
