I think the tree at Hahn is probably a ficus.

MAW warblers

William Murdoch

There was a mass of YR warblers in the huge magnolia tree near Hahn Hall and in the tipu trees lower down, at the Music Academy this morning.  I have never seen so many here - especially in the magnolia.  I didn't find anything unusual - Townsend's, OC, a BT Gray, RC Kinglet.  But it is very noisy there, including some tree work.

Got Boobies? We do!! Ventura pelagic trip on 6 Oct 2018

David Pereksta

We had a very successful trip out of Ventura today with Island Packers. I had one twisted pelagic fantasy when I loaded my gear on the boat this morning and by 4 pm we had fulfilled it...we had all five North American boobies on one trip!!  I imagine we are the first trip to achieve this in the ABA area.

We started at Anacapa Island where we found the continuing Masked Booby on the cliff faces. As we headed south from there we picked up on a distant booby south of Anacapa that we suspected was a Red-footed. Captain Joel floored it and we caught up the the bird, which was indeed a dark morph Red-footed Booby. From there we birded our way down to Santa Barbara Island where we found the continuing Brown Boobies there (80ish birds) with the bonus of a Blue-footed Booby amongst them. As we left the island number five had appeared to elude us, but as we swung around to the east side of the island we encountered a large feeding flock of Black-vented Shearwaters and other birds when soon after the cry of "black-and-white booby" rang out. We put the pedal to the metal one more time and ran down another booby. We eventually got close looks at the bird and noted the orangish bill...Nazca Booby! All five North American boobies on the same day...amazing! Perhaps a once in a lifetime birding event.

Beyond the booby extravaganza, we had good fortune with a number of other birds including several large flock of Black-vented Shearwaters, which totaled in excess of 6,000 birds. These flocks had other shearwaters mixed in including Pink-footed, Buller's, and a Manx; numbers of attending jaegers (Pomarines and Parasitics); and others including Red-necked Phalarope, Common Murre, Cassin's Auklet, and Northern Fulmar. Deeper water south of the northern Islands had more shearwaters including one of the few Sooties we saw all day, Black and Ashy Storm-Petrels (and a Least seen by a few of us), Long-tailed Jaegers, Sabine's Gulls, Common Terns, and a number of Craveri's Murrelets. All in all a day that will be remembered by everyone there. Some birders got all five boobies as lifers, which is completely unfair to those of us that needed 49 years to see them all in the ABA Area. ;-)

Thanks to Island Packers and Captain Joel Barrett for supporting our pelagic endeavors, and the leaders that helped today (Adam Searcy, Hugh Ranson, and Wes Fritz).

We hope to get more trips on the schedule out of Ventura next year.

Cheers

Dave Pereksta

Alder Flycatcher (Empidonax alnorum) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 30, 2018 11:55 by Thomas Wurster
- Lake Los Carneros Park, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.44322,-119.84975&ll=34.44322,-119.84975
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48925631
- Comments: "Kristi Nelson alerted our group about a possible Alder Flycatcher at about 1PM. Description: Empid with a thin, circular white eye ring, bold contrasty wing panel with near black coverts tipped broadly with near white (tinged w/ buff) and tertial edges - this combination rules out Western Willow Flycatcher. Continuously white below from chin to vent except for diffuse gray-olive smudging on upper sides. Back, when viewed in bright shade was notably green-olive, greener than than brown-olive back color I associate with Western WIFL. On a later viewing when I observed it from the rear with its head turned to the side, the head appeared a paler grayish-olive, contrasting with its darker back. Its bill was noticably shorter than the long bill of Western WIFL (compared to the 1-2 Western WIFLs that I obseerved in the immediate area, and the 1000's of other Western WIFLs that I have observed), but had the same basic bill shape. The bill was blackish-brown above and on the sides, and yellowish on the underside. I was never able to view bill shape from below. Body plan essentially identical to WIFL - a largish heavy-bodied Empid with a medium longish tail, a with a low-rounded crown, and a stout bill. I heard it vocalize unseen on at least 4 occasions - initally faintly at distance but on other occasions loud and clear from 10-15 meters. Initially I heard only a single "pip" note, and later 3 or so bouts of "pip"notes in series. On one occasion it called emphatically while apparently interacting with PSFL. On other occasions no other Empids were noted in the immediate area. There is no question that the ALFL candidate gave the "pip" calls. As I was watching it, it moved just a few feet, landing out of sight, called immediately, and almost as quickly reappeared a few feet away from the calling location. A generally uncooperative bird, it never perched long enough for thorough study - hence I have no info on primary extension or finer detail of plumage color. My views were limited to brief 1-10 second looks with one exception when it moved sort distances btw several mostly visible perches over a 1-2 minute interval. Overall, I viewed it on 4 occasions: first on the lake side of the Scirpus-lined muddy edge of the lake where it perched low on Scirpus stems and dropped onto the mud several times. I also followed it as it made 3 foraging passes along all or part of the willow and Baccaris lined upland edge of the north-most arm of the lake, where it perched at multiple locations and "pipped" infrequently. Search time roughly 4 hours between 1-5 PM, during which I observed it for only a few minutes total! Above composed from notes on plumage, behavior, and call note taken during the observation period. Throughout much of the observation period I/we assumed the "pip" call note confirmed the ID as Alder Flycatcher. During our observation Brian Daniels sent a text message informing me thethat Eastern Willow Flycatchers have been documented/recorded giving "pip" call notes ( Curtis Marantz and others).
Comments added on 4 Oct: after listening to recording "pip" calls from both Alder Flycatcher and Eastern Willow Flycatcher, I feel confident that the calls are sufficiently different in primary pitch (Alder is lower) and duration (Alder is briefer) to be separable with care.To my ear the "pip" calls I heard are a better match to recorded calls of Alder Flycatcher (recordings in the Mccauly LIbrary of Sound and xeno-canto. Furthermore, the "pip" call is a primary vocalization of Alder Flycatcher, but is only an occasional call by Eastern Willow Flycatcher (the "whit" note is its primary call). Given that we heard several bouts of "pip" calls from this flycatcher, but never heard it "whit", is strong evidence that the "pip" call is its primary call - not an ancillary call used in limited contexts - thereby undermining support for its ID as Eastern Willow Flycatcher, and strongly favors its ID as Alder Flycatcher."

Re: [EXTERNAL] [sbcobirding] Possibility of more Broad-winged Hawks this year?

Nick Lethaby <nlethaby@...>

All,

I wanted to point out that there is a hawkwatch monitoring web site where we can add our watchpoints and the count data we are getting from these:  https://hawkcount.org/index.php

I think it would be worth adding the Bella Vista and Romero Canyon watchpoints and the limited data we have.

I put the daily hawk counts from the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory into a spreadsheet and made a graph of Broad-winged Hawks per hour for the period from September 1 to October 4. You can see the resulting graph here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/johncallender/44206177655

The full spreadsheet, including similar graphs for other species, is here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15MG3KXW8WhntIi8wAGq87Zi8FDUB9IWMrte_AErKikE/edit?usp=sharing

There was a big pulse of Broad-wings during the last week of September, but it's slowed to a trickle since then. But I wonder: with the increased northwest winds predicted for the next few days, might we get another pulse of late-departing hawks? Lehman's BoSBC talks about fall Broad-wings appearing along the south coast into early October.

I won't be around Saturday (I'll be on the Island Packers pelagic trip, where the strong northwest winds promise to make things interesting as well, though not necessarily in a conducive-to-birding sense), but I hope to get out to Bella Vista Dr. for at least a little bit this afternoon, and maybe again on Sunday.

I'd be very interested in seeing what people find if they get a chance to visit hawkwatch sites, either Bella Vista Dr./Romero Canyon or along Camino Cielo, over the next few days. I'm also curious whether Figueroa Mountain / Ranger Peak would be good for fall hawkwatching. I haven't seen many eBird lists lately from there lately. But it seems like it might be a good area, just looking at the topography.

If people with more experience are willing to share I'd appreciate hearing their thoughts. Thanks!

Alder Flycatcher (Empidonax alnorum) (1)
- Reported Sep 30, 2018 13:00 by Joan Lentz
- Lake Los Carneros County Park, Santa Barbara, California

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48917986
- Comments: "Let me be clear. I feel that I never saw the bird in the photos that represented the Alder Flycatcher, but because I was present, and I heard what we all assumed was the Alder Flycatcher's call, i would like to describe that. After running futilely from the muddy area up the steep path to the willows and back more than a few times, a bunch of us were up by the big willow clump west of the path and towards the footbridge. At one point, Kristie was there, and she suggested I use my phone for playback just in case the bird responded. It did. It responded twice. After playback once, and during playback once. I never saw the flycatcher utter the call, but it sounded like a rather sharp "peek" or "pic". I am confident that it was not a Willow Flycatcher, because i know the "wit" call of the Willow well. But this bird sounded like a softer --slightly -- version of a Long-billed Dowitcher . I know that may sound preposterous, but it wasn't as sharp as a Downy Woodpecker, nor as squeaky as a Hairy. It had that soft "eek" or "peek" quality, but with a little bite to it. Of course the playback "peep" or "pic" is a louder sound because its right on your phone, but the QUALITY of the response on the part of the purported Alder Flycatcher was definitely close to the sound that I was playing on my phone. I wanted to get this into the record, just in case any of this description might be helpful. My problem was that I wasn't in the right place at the right time, evidently, when any of the photos of the "it" bird were taken. So I cannot comment on appearance."

SB Birders,

I headed out to Kern County to see Condors this morning and made some stops in our county along the way.

My first stop was Richardson Park in New Cuyama, here we saw 8 Lawerence’s Goldfinches, one Clay-colored Sparrow, one Brewer’s Sparrow and 6 Chipping Sparrows which offered a great comparison. The Lark Sparrows are starting to flock up and seemed to be everywhere. We then checked the Cuyama sewage pond and saw one Baird’s Sandpiper a few Westerns and least. The heat glare was making one bird difficult to put a name on it, but it looked very much like a Semipalmated Sandpiper. A Peregrine Falcon was present also. We then checked a private ranch on Foothill and saw one White-faced Ibis. A Ferruginous Hawk was also seen on a power pole. Later over on Bell Road we saw a Prairie Falcon.
We then checked out the Santa Maria sewage ponds and saw one Pectoral and one Baird’s Sandpiper. One Lesser Yellowlegs was present with the 80 or so Greaters. There is a very cool looking House Finch there with a white head with a slight cast of pink.
The Pectoral Sandpiper still continues at Ocean Park on the west side of the train trestle.

Good birding.

Bella Vista Hawk Watch Site Oct. 2

Florence Sanchez

I went back to site this morning and stayed from 10:30 to about 1;15.  I was opening there would be some indication of migrating activity ahead of the incoming front, but I didn't detect any.  I think this is because the frontal boundary (if one develops) was still either very far away and/or too weak to make a difference.

It was very quiet until a little after noon.  Then I had in rapid succession 1 Turkey Vulture and one Sharp-shinned Hawk.  Then nothing for awhile until I heard the scream of a Red-tail behind me and the houses.  I moved to where I could see that area and had 4 Red-tails sail by in rapid succession.  Some of them started circling well to the east and when I looked above them at that point, I found two more Red-tails and a more distant, smaller buteo that may have been a Broad-winged.  It was too far away to tell.

After that it was quiet for a bit.  I was joined by Jerry Rounds and after a bit, we had a few more Red-tails, Turkey Vultures, one Sharp-shinned and one distant Cooper's Hawk.  After 1 p.m.things pretty much stopped, so we left.  There wasn't nearly as much activity as yesterday, although we were seeing the same species of birds and though it was cooler today, they didn't seem to be having any problem finding thermals.  My sense after birding there at noon for two days is that most of what we see then are residents in the general area.

It will be interesting to see if the rain does move through tomorrow, and if so, how it might change the activity over the next couple of days.

Mitchell Road Ferruginous Hawk

John Deacon

All:

This afternoon while walking my dog by the SM Airport, I saw a single Ferruginous Hawk near Mitchell Road. First spotted sitting on the ground inside the airport fence. He then flew to the east side of Mitchell and landed on the ground just east of the fence. A Red Tail took exception and a serious “dust up” occurred. FEHA flew directly overhead as it retreated into the airport. Hopefully the FEHAs that we’re here last year will return. Marc Moritsch and I had as many as 5 at this location last winter.

- Comments: "This bird has been here awhile. We had long looks at the Blackpoll Warbler noting it's fairly large size, slow moving behavior. The bird has a yellowish wash on the head and upper breast, then fading to clear white on belly and vent areas. Two whitish wing-bars are evident, as well as a dark greenish/gray back on which you can see regularly spaced dark streaks lengthwise. Looking at the face, the bird appears to have a faint eyeline, and the sides of the flanks held faint streaks."

- Comments: "Nonbreeding female Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The bird was in the tall eucs at the southwest corner of the visitor parking. I based the ID initially mainly on the dark streaking across the center of the breast. After soliciting and receiving much helpful input from experts via the sbcobirding email list, I'd add that the wing linings in the blurry flight photo appear to be a somewhat darker "mustard" yellow, rather than the Black-headed Grosbeak's "lemon" yellow."

Golete warbler spots

Nick Lethaby <nlethaby@...>

All,

I have checked Winchester 1 the last two morning and Evergreen briefly this AM. It was immediately clear on Monday that there has been a large reduction in Yellow and Wilson’s Warblers at Winchester 1 and that theme continued at both spots this AM. There were at least 3 BT Grays at Winchester 1 this AM, making it the commonest warbler, and the RB Sapsucker continued.

Yes, harriers do migrate high along the ridge line at times.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [sbcobirding] mystery hawk tail

Yesterday, Mario and I birded East Camino Cielo.  A couple of interesting hawk sightings:

A large soaring hawk with a solid black tail and terminal white band did not show up in Sibley's  Help ID-ing would be appreciated.

Also, would Harriers fly that high?  We had two fly-over birds with long tails, white rumps, slight dihedral wing positions . . . .

No Broad-wings.

Later, lots of common birds near the creek in Rocky Nook.
