Morning birds around Alice Keck Park

Dika Golovatchoff

All,
Having walked my two retrievers I had my older slower camera with me.  While with dogs I spotted a Western Bluebird on a large tree trunk (I believe magnolia).  After taking them home I looked around the creek area near the audio station 9 at Alice Keck Park.  I noticed a tiny black and white bird drop into the creek and bathe.  It then flew up into the mature loropetalum shrub to shake out its feathers and dry off.  It was impossible to get a focus on the bird through the dense shrub, but I got a couple of shots anyway.  I think it may be a Black & White Warbler.  Then as I looked up toward where the banjo players play on Wednesday nights a young raptor flew in and perched for less than a minute before flying off again.  I'd love some help on ID. I've just posted on https://www.flickr.com/photos/digolov/.  There are also Townsend's (Rocky Nook) and a House Wren (AKP) from yesterday.  I plan to check out Orpett park after lunch.

Yep, in the field next to Calle Caesar Chavez ( east) in a fenced area I have seen one Brewers Sparrow, one Vesper Sparrow and a MacGillivray’s Warbler and I am not looking for birds. I am working with the railroad right now.

Good birding.

All,

I checked out Winchester 1 this morning. John Callender was there when I arrived. We were able to refind the Chestnut-sided Warbler. Later I saw it better and could see conspicuous chestnut on the flanks. Can someone confirm that the bird previously seen has those. After John had unfortunately left, I headed south into the grove and found a Tennessee and a Blackburnian Warbler. Note that viewing conditions for warblers high up in the eucs in the gloomy morning light are challenging. I had a Red-breasted Sapsucker as well. This has pretty conspicuous red on the head so is presumably different to the sapsucker seen by Rebecca yesterday.

I wanted to alert other birder to the fact there is a bird bath attracting a number of tanagers and warblers. If you follow the path into the grove, it cuts across diagonally to a gate that leads into a mobile home complex. There is a bird bath about 8 yards N of this gate on the far side of the chain link fence.

Hi All,
Chase Palm Park has a lot of warblers in it right now. I have NOT been inside the park, but I am along the train tracks and I can hear and see them moving around.

North County birding today

Mark Holmgren

Today I visited four North County spots.

A pasture was being flooded on the east side of Black Road about 1 mile north of Betteravia Rd.  Though the only shorebirds present were Greater Yellowlegs and Killdeer, this area could attract other shorebirds. See https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48717104

The Santa Maria Wastewater Treatment Plant had very little shorebird or sparrow diversity. Kind of disappointing.  https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48729808

The Santa Maria River Estuary was not exciting, but offshore a bundle of Black-vented Shearwaters were flying south.  Among them was a Northern Fulmar.  https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48729414

The Santa Ynez River Estuary had the Chestnut-sided Warbler found by Nick Lethaby. At least one Common Tern was flying around. A Calidris was present that could have been a late Semipalmated Sandpiper. Photos of the warbler and sandpiper are on the eBird checklist. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48731124
