Date
late report of Ruddy Turnstone

Steven Gaulin

Sunday December 11 at about 4:30 PM in fog and gathering dusk I had a single Ruddy Turnstone at Coal Oil Point foraging with more numerous Willets, Black-bellied Plovers, and Black Turnstones. Its size, shape, bill, and distinctive breast pattern were discernible despite the sub-optimal viewing conditions.

Carpinteria Peregrine

Jared Dawson

At 10:40 this morning the 13th I noticed a PEREGRINE FALCON finishing up what appeared to be once a collared-dove or pigeon on top of a telephone pole on Carpinteria Ave in Carpintera just west of Franklin Creek. Three and a half hours later, it is still perched on the pole as I type.

White Pelican continues LLC area

Peter Schneekloth

Just stepped outside and saw a single White Pelican soaring overhead (just south of Lake Los Carneros). Also a flock of geese with 3-4 Snow/Ross headed towards the lake.

Of possible interest, this past Saturday after a very early morning owling scout with Mark Holmgren for the Cachuma CBC, we had two distant Swans flying N of Armour Ranch Road. They were distant and barely visible through the haze but bills seemed to be all black so likely they were Tundra Swans. They disappeared below the horizon so we tried to chase to a few local ponds. Later in the day I tried the gravel pond in Buellton and Ocean and River parks in Lompoc to no avail.

I went back on Sunday afternoon and found the mergansers much more active.  I appreciate whoever posted about this lovely park Anisq'Oyo in the first place.  For anyone who is interested I compiled a 6 minute video which is online at:

Red-necked Grebe continues at El Capitan, 2016-12-12

Wim van Dam

Nick's RED-NECKED GREBE continues at the east side of El Capitan Beach
SP. It is in a flock of 45 WESTERN/CLARK'S GREBES. The fog makes
viewing conditions less than ideal but when the bird sticks its head
up it is identifiable through a scope. I looked at it from the
pull-out spot off the 101, but apparently the bird can also be seen
from "the east end of the park on the rock part of the nature trail".

Riviera scouting Sunday

Went to Fransceschi Pk and had Peregrine perched at park top. Few warblers, sparrows, bushtits, etc perhaps due to dryness and/or lack of euc blooms. A Fox Sparrow, Wh-Breasted Nuthatch and some Allens'/selasphorous are in neighborhood.  Ron  Santa Barbara

In addition to the grebe, I checked a couple of other spots between Refugio and Gaviota. Saw about 300 scoters, 15 Common, 8 Pacific, and one RT Loon, 3 Horned Grebes, and 76 BC Shearwaters.

At Ocean Beach Park, I think a female Common Goldeneye was previously unreported. The Ibis was still there, as were 3 Bonaparte's Gulls. We need another couple of inches of rain to get the place humming.

Rose Breasted Grosbeak

John Deacon

At 3:45 p.m. today (Sunday, December 11), our Rose Breasted Grosbeak visited our feeders again (pic will be posted on E Bird later today). Unfortunately we are just outside of the Santa Maria/Guadalupe CBC Circle. We are just east of Broadway by SMX.

He has been visiting our feeders off and on for the last 2 or 3 weeks.

Three White Pelicans flew in to Lake Los Carneros at 2:50 p.m. They circled for
a long time, so long that I lost patience with them and didn't see if they
landed.

From the El Capitan state beach exit head E and in a few hundred yards there is a small paved pulling area on the right by a pepper tree. The bird is below here to the right. Note there is also a Western Grebe flock to the left.

Hooded Mergansers at Anisq'Oyo' Park

Dika Golovatchoff

This morning I visited this charming park in the heart of Isla Vista which was quiet and lovely with UCSB over for the year and most students already headed home for the winter break.

The park at 931 Embarcadero del Mar includes a small, narrow, and irregularly shaped pond which is surrounded by tall green reeds and a complete fence around its perimeter. At least 60 Mallards floated lazily in the water, and three juvenile Black-crowned Night Herons were squeezed among the reeds.  Perched on a tree in the center of the water I first found an adult male Hooded Merganser in alternate plumage.  As he was resting his crest was not raised.  A branch partially blocked my view and while I searched for a better vantage point he was replaced by what I believe is a 1st winter male.  He stayed for quite some time, preening.  I've never seen these ducks out of water before.  Their feet propel them underwater to catch fish.

Santa Ynez Valley - Baseline/Happy Canyon Rd.

Gayle Hackamack and I scouted the Happy Canyon /Baseline area this am.  We found a Vesper Sparrow at the small triangular paddock on the west side of the entrance to 5162 (34.608306, -120.026142). We have seen Vesper Sparrows at this location during previous CBC's.

We had a brief sighting of the Eastern Phoebe reported by Mark Holmgren on Stalion Dr.(aka Agueda Rd.). It was on the grey fence on the ridge to the left of the road as you descend into the valley.  This bird seems to be very skittish as it flew off almost immediately after we got out of the car and could not be found again,

We had a Red-breasted Sapsucker in the Pepper Trees on the left side of Linda Vista Dr. near the junction with Baseline.

No sign of the Red-naped Sapsucker or the Scarlet Tanager.
