Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) (1)

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52572067
- Comments: "Continuing in field east of the flooded pasture. Tall, long-legged bird with large wing coverts drooping over flight feathers; overall gray with paler face and darker fore-crown down to eye. (My description originally said "red fore-crown," as it appeared that way from a distance. Good, more up close photos of this bird show it is not red n the fore crown. Not sure if it could be molting to red since these photos were taken, or if I just assumed it was red.) Bill a little shorter than that of nearby Great Egret, but less pointed and tapering."

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 10, 2019 15:05 by Jamie Chavez
- Black Road Pasture, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.9316823,-120.489099&ll=34.9316823,-120.489099

- Comments: "I met Conor and Julie at the Black Road pasture after receiving a message about a possible Lesser Black-backed Gull they had been looking at. After several minutes of scoping through all the gulls, it was located along the east shoreline of the pond. It was picked out by its very pale or whitish head and neck with contrasting all black bill. The bill looked rather straight and not especially large. It had a grayish area on the cheek below the eye. The lower belly and sides were marked with grayish spots at the sides of the neck and larger mottling along the sides and on the belly. It was intermediate in size somewhere between Herring Gull and Ring-billed Gull and was approximately the same size as a California Gull of which there were many nearby for direct comparison. It moved around and stood in profile for a short time where it showed fairly long wings extending beyond the end of the tail. Upperpart and wing patterning was noticeably checkered dark brown. Leg color was dull pinkish. Eventually, the bird flew and the large blackish tail band was seen. Upper wing pattern showed two dark bars and the primaries were very dark and nearly blackish. The bird returned to the water and wandered to the grass where it stood for a time and then settled down to roost. Total viewing time was about 45 minutes."

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 10, 2019 12:43 by Conor Scotland
- Flooded Field, Black Rd (34.9319 -120.4899), Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.931867,-120.489943&ll=34.931867,-120.489943
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52581650
- Media: 9 Photos
- Comments: "This apparent first winter bird was very contrastingly dark and white (kind of a black and white look), with a bright whitish face and breast contrasting with darker back. Overall much less warm coloration than seen in neighboring immature gulls. On the light face, the area around the eye was smudged darker. The bill was all dark, straight-sided, and somewhat stubby. In the flight photos you can see a white rump contrasting with a thick dark tail band. Breast was pale with dark streaking or spotting mostly on breast sides. I only saw the bird from the side briefly. It showed what seemed like long wings that extended visibly out past the tail. I would have liked to have seen it at this angle for more time though. As seen in the flight shot, the inner primaries are dark, where a HEGU would have a lighter window here."

Palm Warbler (Western) (Setophaga palmarum palmarum) (1)
- Reported Feb 11, 2019 09:55 by Mark Holmgren
- Santa Maria WTP, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.9487269,-120.4915452&ll=34.9487269,-120.4915452
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52615417
- Comments: "Unable to photograph this bird. It was along the southern fence south of any ponds darting in and out of the cyclone fence. The bird’s behavior was most notable: it’s rear end bobbed up-and-down exposing bright yellow undertail coverts. I saw no yellow elsewhere in the body. Otherwise, the bird was conspicuously grayish-brown throughout. A long pale white supercilium was the most distinctive mark on the face. I am aware that this species is quite uncommon this distance (9.1 miles) from the coast of northern Santa Barbara County."

Bird was smaller than Western Gulls nearby, slightly larger than California Gulls. Legs not yellow but dullest possible pink; it’s as though the feet didn’t reach maturity but the rest of the bird had. White head with fine streaks to nape and back. Bill yellow, slender with distinctive dark marks circling the base and elsewhere giving it the appearance of some sort of lamination problem. Oval red mark on distal mandible. Iris yellow or white stood out due to the dark smudge encircling the eye. I couldn’t figure out the orbital ring color. White tips to 6 or 7 primaries protruding beyond the folded secondaries. Bird not seen in flight."

Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 16, 2019 13:08 by Curtis Marantz
- Black Rd north of Betteravia, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.9305803,-120.4901161&ll=34.9305803,-120.4901161
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52804535
- Comments: "We again saw the continuing crane in about the same place where I had previously seen it in mid-January, and thus at a distance of 300-400 meters, as it foraged in the field to the east of the one that was flooded. I again noted that this was a large wader that appeared to be just a little larger than a nearby Great Blue Heron. Also apparent was that it had a shorter bill, a steeper forehead and a more rounded crown on a head that sat atop a neck that lacked the S-curve of a heron. More obvious, however, was this birds hunch-backed appearance that included a "bustle" that appeared to represent elongate and conspicuously decurved tertials that covered the wingtips and tail.
The plumage was more uniformly medium-gray than that of the heron, but I also noted that the forehead was a deep=red in color back to a point roughly above the eye, that the face was whitish, and that the neck, back, wings, and underparts were medium-gray apart from some warm-brown on the wing coverts, albeit with a pattern that I could not determine with certainty.
I thought the bill was dark, and I noted that the legs were dark gray, but I was unable to see the color of the eyes."

Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) (1) CONFIRMED

Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) (1) CONFIRMED

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 16, 2019 11:13 by margeNdon thornton
- Ocean Beach County Park, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.6909567,-120.6003785&ll=34.6909567,-120.6003785
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52797397
- Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "About the size of the California Gulls, but dark like the WesternGulls. The head was streaked, although the photos do not show it very well. The dark smudge around the eye emphasizes the clear iris. In flight, this bird displays squarish patches on the wing tops."

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 16, 2019 10:32 by David Compton
- Ocean Beach County Park, Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.6909567,-120.6003785&ll=34.6909567,-120.6003785
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52795726
- Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing/returning adult. Very distinctive individual with black horizontal line on the maxilla, small black area on the edge of the red spot on the bill, and signs of leucism evident in several white feathers on the tops of each wing. Another distinctive feature of the bird was the odd leg color, which I considered a dull pinkish yellow or dull pink/yellow. I've heard the legs of this bird described as yellow-green or greenish yellow, but I saw no greenish tones at all on the legs.

In other respects this bird looked like any adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. When the bird was at rest, the upper parts were a dark gray very similar in tone and darkness to nearby adult Western Gulls. The underparts were white. The head was mostly white, but with an obvious dark smudge around the pale yellow eye and fine white streaking on the crown and nape. The tail was white. When the bird was at rest, you could also see white spots on the black flight feathers. When the bird was in flight, you could see one flight feather (second from the feather?) that had an extensive black tip with a prominent white spot below the tip.

Structurally, the bird was smaller than Western Gull, and probably a little closer in size to California than to Western. It had a more slender, daintier appearance than Western Gull, and a longer-winged appearance. I felt the head also seemed proportionally smaller than that of Western Gull. The bill was both narrower and shorter than that of Western, and was of relatively even length. Compared to the bill of California Gull, it was broader and possibly shorter."

- Comments: "Continuing adult. On sandbar north of the river mouth with other gulls. Small size, unmarked yellow bill, dark auricular patch blending into gray hindcrown, small dark wingtips when it flew. I noted that this bird was oiled below; moreso, it looked like, than in the photos from Jamie Chavez's list from February 14 (if this is the same bird, which I'm not sure it is). See https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52705306."

- Comments: "While sheltering from the rain in my car at 8:55 a.m. I had a distant view of a gull bathing in the open water of the estuary east of the parking lot. Through binoculars I thought I saw a white patch at the base of the primaries on the bird's upper wing similar to the mark that the Lesser Black-backed Gull previously seen at Ocean Beach Park has. I took some (poor) photos that I believe show this to be the same bird.

I don’t believe the photos I took are sufficient to support the identification as Lesser Black-backed Gull on their own. Because of this bird’s specific pattern of leucistic marks at the base of its primaries and the dark smudging around the eye, though, I believe this is likely the same bird that was photographed the day before by Don Thornton (see https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52797397) and Dave Compton (see https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S52795726).

The bird I photographed flew away to the west, but did not appear to be present when I (and others) subsequently examined the gulls at the river mouth."
