Continuing Curlew Sandpiper

Robert Lindsay

While Nick may have taken this bird off the ultra-rarity list for our area since it has been around so long, it is still around and was easy to find in the middle of this morning foraging in its usual spot a few hundred yards towards Goleta Beach from the stairs below Parking Lot 6 at UCSB. It was joined by at least 3 Dunlin and a host of other common shorebirds. A jogger and, later, a dog disturbed these birds but the flocks were easy to follow until they settled at some nearby spot and the Curlew Sandpiper was easy to re-find. The kelp racks which seem to be providing a lot of shorebird food are smaller than they were but still reasonably abundant so there is reason to think this bird will be around a while yet.

That's all,
