Through a spotting scope at 30 meters I obtained better looks at, but no photographs of, this bird. I focused on the wings and the head.
Face: dusky yellow-orange throughout. No line through the eye, no superciliary line.
Wingbars quite distinct, no ‘teething’ on the anterior wingbar, solid gray base of the median wing coverts. Strong contrast between wingbars and the rest of the wing."

Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) (1)
- Reported Jan 04, 2019 09:00 by Louis Bevier

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S51305474
- Comments: "In tree tops of buildings south and east of Coal Oil Point Nature Center--a long-tailed, yellow-bellied kingbird with pale gray head and throat, which blended with yellow of breast; greenish back; tail dark brown and notched with no pale markings on webs. Face pale with thin blackish mask. Bill appeared long and slender. No vocalizations, but it did react to brief TK playback; so ID assumed versus Couch's, but long bill and tail look right for Tropical. This bird ultimately worked the chainlink fence line at the southeast border of area. This would seem rather far for the known North Campus Open Space bird to travel, but I suppose that is possible. Photos."

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S51354140
- Comments: "Careful study of bird originally found by rob hamilton in small cluster of palms around here (34.4323262, -119.7589860). Apparently second winter record for the county and first on the count. Foraging low to the ground, often using brush piles. Overall small empid seeming relatively compact on the upper body and head and longer/rangier towards the posterior. Primary projection was short and evenly-spaced. Roundish head showing slight crest. Decently long tail showed pale outer rectrices at times. Head gray with white throat contrasting slightly with greenish/olive back, and on the front white throat contrasting with dingy olivy-yellow cast across breast and belly. Wing panel bright for a dufl, showing relatively dark brownish panel and somewhat bright white wingbars, but not as contrasty as I would expect a least. Bill narrow and somewhat short, with black at the tip of the yellow mandible. Not definitively heard vocalizing"

- Comments: "I found this bird foraging out in the open, near the ground, in the fenced-in part of Laguna Blanca. Later, in the afternoon, Peter Gaede and I heard it call three times when it made a flight -- a soft "whit" that did not seem as sharp as that of a Least Flycatcher. See photos; points indicating Dusky Flycatcher include: Small empid with olive-brown back, wings, and tail; short primary-projection with feather-tips evenly spaced; brownish panel between two whitish wing-bars giving low-resolution appearance compared with Least Flycatcher, which has blackish panel; dull yellowish underparts contrasting with whitish throat; prominent pale loral area; teardrop-shaped eye-ring; fairly long, narrow-based bill. First record of this species on the SB CBC."

- Comments: "Varying shades of yellow all over this wet-looking tanager. Continuing in this general location for weeks. Various vocalizations that at times sounded closer to a Western Tanager than I expected it should. Seen in multiple spots near the persimmon tree east of the aviary. Perched in this tree near the last persimmon. There had been at least two dozen of this fruit a few weeks ago."
