Distinguished from a Cassin’s Kingbird by its lighter gray head, longer and heavier black bill, greenish back, and brighter yellow belly which came higher up on the breast (and where it seemed slightly smudged with green). This bird had a notched tail that lacked the white tip of a Cassin’s Kingbird."

- Reported Nov 21, 2020 07:45 by David Blue
- UCSB North Campus Open Space (formerly Ocean Meadows Golf Course), Santa Barbara, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=34.421439,-119.8713662&ll=34.421439,-119.8713662
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S76516427
- Media: 3 Photos
- Comments: "Seen immediately west of the Phelps Creek Bridge in the low vegetation on the west side of the road where it bends 90 degrees north before bending back to the west. A dull brown bird with a brown cap, a thin pale eyebrow, pale arcs above and below the eyes, and a thin bill. It had pale underparts with brown streaks, and the undertail coverts were a pale yellow. It looked like a "western" Palm Warbler, but it didn't seem to bob its tail. Then, with a clearer view, I realized that it did not even have a tail! Focusing on the rear of this bird while it was foraging on the ground, I could see that it was actually bobbing it's rear end up and down."

Dark-eyed Junco (Pink-sided) (Junco hyemalis mearnsi) (1)

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S76790358
- Comments: "While watching a flock of ground-feeding juncos around this location I noticed one of them had a solid gray head and upper breast with an almost bluish cast to it in the shade, and a rather prominent black facial mask surrounding the base of the bill to the eye in the loral area. This black mask is what caught my attention while I was looking through the flock. As the bird moved in profile I could see the extensive mauve-ping sides which extended nearly to the center of the breast leaving the center of the breast and down onto the belly white in color. The back color was a solid dull brown which contrasted with the gray head and the pinkish flanks. I watched the bird feeding in leaf litter with "Oregon" juncos for about five minutes before it flew into oak trees above."

- Comments: "This bird was viewed through binoculars from my window which I have measured to be nine to ten feet away. I'm assuming it is the same bird I've been seeing off and on since before November 10, 2020. It was seen foraging under an aloe plant, (partially obscured). It was also seen resting at this same location for a minute or more at which point it moved quickly to behind a snowberry plant and then into a camellia bush; I was unable to get a photo. It was also seen again at 1:45 PM flying out of the camellia shrub and out of sight. Weather conditions were clear and sunny. Details of the bird include:
-yellow throat and breast (yellow ends at the base of the breast)
-hefty bill (not slender like a warbler)
-had white “spectacles”
-upper parts of the bird are brownish

Other:
-its size was between that of a CALT and WCSP (two birds I regularly see in my yard)
-it is extremely secretive and moves quickly to and from cover"
