Ocean Beach Park shorebird migration

Nick Lethaby

All,

The SYRE mouth is still tidal although the tidal range is pretty limited. Yesterday evening, there were lots of migrant shorebirds, including 440 Western Sandpipers, 2 Least Sandpipers, a Semipalmated Sandpiper, and 3 Short-billed Dowitchers. The other shorebirds present like Greater Yellowlegs were probably oversummering birds.

The shorebird flocks are all over the river but move around a lot. If you are patient, you can usually see them land on the mud spit opposite the car park. If there is no heat haze and you have a good scope, you can get decent looks. I had 9 Least Terns and there are lots of pelicans, gulls, and Caspian Terns at the river mouth itself.

Regards,

Nick
